I was watching the news (Chicago) a couple of days ago and they were commenting on how pets are becoming the latest victims of the economic slowdown. Apparently local shelters are getting inundated with pets, as people are either forced to give them up because they can't afford them, or forced to give them up because they are moving from houses to apartments (which don't allow pets.)

They interviewed one shelter employee who said that they received 200 (!) pets last weekend alone...which to me seems to be a stunningly high figure, especially if that one shelter's numbers can be extrapolated across a region or nationwide.

IMHO, it is very telling if a material number of people are compelled to give up their pets due to economic conditions...
