If you are only going to read one, I'd read Lonesome Dove. If you think you might read several, read Deadman's Walk, Comanche Moon, Lonesome Dove, and Streets of Laredo, in that order.

It might help to watch Lonesome Dove movie first. It's the best movie ever made, in my opinion. It helps to fix the characters in your mind.

I've read the Berrybender Chronicles, which was kinda disappointing.
