Intel has confirmed plans to launch solid-state hard disks (SSDs) based on NAND flash memory.

The announcement was slipped into a keynote Wednesday at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Shanghai. Intel, which says its planned SSDs will more than double the capacity of its competitors', has the potential to shake up the market for mobile hard drives, sources say. Benefits of NAND-based SSDs include lower power consumption, greater shock resistance and potentially better performance than a typical hard disk.

Also out of IDF, Intel revealed that it's now shipping its Atom chip, which will enable PC-like capabilities on mobile devices. The processor comes in five versions, the fastest of which runs at 1.86 GHz while consuming 2 watts of power.
