AT&T board set to meet Wednesday

NEW YORK, Oct 14 (Reuters) - AT&T Corp's board of directors is expected to meet
Wednesday in New York to consider a potentially larger list of candidates to serve as its
new chief
executive, industry sources said Tuesday.

AT&T spokeswoman Adele Ambrose said the board will hold ''its regularly scheduled
October
board meeting tomorrow,'' but declined to comment on the meeting's agenda.

Industry sources said the board's search has expanded beyond the previous short list,
which was
rumored to include candidates such as AT&T's Vice Chairman John Zeglis and Hughes
Electronics'
Chief Executive C. Michael Armstrong.

''They are expected to meet tomorrow and the word is that a new name or two has
emerged as a
possibility,'' said one industry source who declined to be named.

If AT&T is considering new candidates, ''that would mean that the selection is farther
away than
tomorrow's board meeting,'' said Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network
Architects
Inc.

Industry watchers had hoped AT&T, which has suffered management changes and lacked
clear
strategic direction, would reach a decision soon. But if the board mulls new candidates, a
quick
resolution looks less likely, analysts said.

''People had wanted a company that does not move very fast to, in this case, move fast.
But it looks
like it could be modus operandi: normal,'' Dzubeck said.

AT&T has been searching for a new leader to succeed Chairman Robert Allen since
former heir
apparent John Walter resigned abruptly in July after the board declined to hand him the
reins.
