FredE, I've read that they calculate the short interest by counting every short trade, whether it's been covered or not. (please correct me if I'm wrong) Could it be that the MM's use naked short trades (sell stock they don't have) and cover later that same day when the price drops (like it has consistently in the afternoon). This would make them some cash over and above the spread. I'm speculating here, but looking for an explanation of the numbers. It seems impossible that there could really be over 1/3 the float sold short in this stock given the Street's anticipation of good 3d and 4th qtr news. Does anyone have an explanation how we could continue to have so much short interest at this stage of an uptrend?
