Sony/Fuji Alliance to produce 200 MB super floppy drives

Syquest down 8% today on news that a Sony Fuji alliance will produce a super floppy drive with a capacity of 200MB. That's why Syquest is concentrating on the higher capacity. I think their EZ Flyer product is dead in the waters. I wonder what impact this will have on Iomega.

The rumoured SparQ if priced correctly would severely undermine future Jazz sales unless Iomega can reprice their Jazz carts to the same price.

I suspect that Syjet will be able to read these new 1GB cartridges and if so at $33 a GB it'll be a bargain. I do think Syquest is positioning itself in the upper range because the smaller removable market is too crowded and Iomega has won that battle.

SparQ would be targeted to price conscious consumers who will not worry about the compatibility with Jazz drives. I think Syquest could pull off a brilliant move if they can produce enought of these drives at a margin. They'll need huge economies of scale to make a large profit.

Anyway any significant news won't come out until Nov 17 giving plenty of potential upside until then.
