Mediterraneans have the best of both melanin worlds. Fair skin when the sun is weak in winter, tan skin in the summer.

The really pale people were forced north and west by glaciers, I assume during the Younger Dryas, as the gene for blue eyes got started around then, the epicenter being located near the shores of the Black Sea.

Inuits and their Siberian cousins have dark skin but they get a lot of Vitamin D from their diet.

My dad, who is mostly French, turns very dark in the summer but his belly is white as a fish. I don't think people like him get skin cancer very much.
