McCarthy switched parties and became a fascist rightwinger who built up the lie that anyone who supported rights for the middleclass, workers, blacks, free speech, etc, was a "communist" and deserved to be destroyed and tried as a traitor.

Instead, McCarthy was the traitor.

By the time McCarthy went over to the dark side, all the Kennedys were solidly against him. I'm sure they found it very disturbing because McCarthy was once a close friend and true American.

Reagan was also. He was a liberal democrat in the 1950 era presidential race. I heard a radio ad he made attacking the Standard Oil fat cats for cashing in while the workingclass is struggling. He endorsed all the democrats and attacked the GOP. If he hadn't crossed over he might have been our greatest president ever.
