I was just in a Saturn (a GM company) dealership. The place was dead on a Saturday morning, and I don't think it was just the slow economy. I looked at their cars, and was amazed at the low gas mileage (mpg) offerings they are trying to sell the American public. They have a new subcompact model called the Astra. I approached the Astra thinking Saturn has finally introduced a highly efficient subcompact to compete with the Honda Civics of the world. I was startled when I read the mpg rating of only 26 City and 30 Highway. My 2002 Saturn SL-1 gets 36 mpg Highway, and it's a mid-sized car with a trunk.

Who will buy an Astra in this era of rising gasoline prices when bigger cars get better mileage and competitors like Honda sell similiar sized cars that get much better gas mileage. It seems as if Saturn is in for a few bad years, and perhaps reorganization, until they start selling high mileage hybrids. Because the current lineup is a loser for American consumers who need efficient cars in this rising gasoline price environment.
