Henry Fonda and John Wayne were great in their own roles, but they would have been a disaster for Lonesome Dove. I've heard that McMurtry refused them. I would not make a single change in the cast either.

"Return to Lonesome Dove" had some of the same cast and starred John Voight as Call. McMurtry had nothing to do with it and later wrote it out of possibility in Streets of Laredo by killing off some of the characters and scenarios. However, it was an enjoyable movie in its own right, in my opinion. Voight was effective as Call.

My favorite character in both was Pea Eye, played by Tim Scott. I'd like to see that actor in other movies, but unfortunately he's dead now. His filmography is extensive, however. I do not remember him in Electric Horseman with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Pea Eye was played by Sam Shepard in Streets of Laredo. He was effective, but totally different from Tim Scott.
