10 things you should know about John McCain (but probably don't):

1. John McCain voted against establishing a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now he says his position has "evolved," yet he's continued to oppose key civil rights laws.1

How could anyone "not know this" about John McCain? It was the lead story on every channel this week.

Furthermore, anyone who was paying attention knew it when McCain strongly supported the state holiday in Arizona; the man came out and said he made a mistake on the Federal holiday, and it was big news at the time.

Lots of people, including me, opposed it at the time on fiscal responsibility grounds. As it has turned out, everyone but the government pretty much ignores it, so it is harmless, other than giving government employees one more free day off. Nobody doubted King's relevance or importance, but it didn't then rise to the level of taking a day of nationally for it.

I have much greater respect and understanding for King today than I did in 1983, and I think a lot of other whites do, as well. But I still doubt whether a national holiday was called for.
