I live in the DC metro area (Northern Virginia) and the shopping malls are jam-packed with people buying stuff, and the restaurants are so crowded that it's impossible to get a seat on Friday or Saturday night without a reservation.

Yesterday I was in Best Buy looking at TVs. Can't make up my mind between plasma, lcd, dlp and front projector. Was talking to a guy who bought a dlp for his dad, was trying to talk me into dlp as the best bang for the buck, and he's probably right but the living room has a couple of funny angle, and my mom is now living in what used to be the rec room. Anyway the lines seem to be as long as ever, same for Costco.

Maybe it's just a good time for bargain hunting but that doesn't explain not being able to get a seat at restaurants, at least the ones that are popular with the well-heeled.

I imagine that restaurants that cater to "recent" immigrants might not be doing as well. I don't see guys standing around outside the Seven-Eleven looking for work anymore but it's been a very cold and wet spring.

Would it be bad for the US economy if the illegals had to go back home and employers had to pay real wages for a change? I can't answer that, maybe an economist can.
