knighty, i was about to get on you on the basketball comment. watch pros vs joes when they go up against the retired pros - they get tossed around like rag dolls and end up on their behinds an awful lot.
not to mention in the 3 on 3 leagues, offensive fouls effectively don't exist. a week an a half ago i found myself sticking a 6'2" guy (3.5" taller than i) who out weighed me by 100 lbs. he turned around and swept his elbows right across my face. at that point, i wasn't more interested in protecting my face than the play, so i just started stepping backwards trying to protect my face from more out of control elbows. he steps right into me and pushes me back even farther until i end up under the basket.
i'm making sure my head is still in place and i don't even know what happened with the play other than he apparently lost control of the ball as he was steamrolling me, so he called a foul on me, apparently for not moving my face out of the way of his space clearing elbows (i wasn't in his space) fast enough and/or not moving backwards fast enough as he ran me over.
there is no more honor - even in rec leagues. ok, there probably never was. if i did that to a 100 lb guy, though, i'd feel bad about not having enough game to at least make a move on the guy. the shame is, this guy is pretty decent, but he's lazy and just prefers to steamroll people - well, at least those 100 lbs lighter. i'm sure his game would change entirely should he be up against someone bigger than him - and it would mostly be his mouth complaining about being fouled b/c someone else is doing to him what he likes to do to others. |
