I woke up this morning picking at nits, so kindly excuse me ...

Back in the 1950s the highest marginal tax rate was 70%....ridiculous

the top rate was 91% in the 50's, but you had to hit $400k to get there. Average person in those days probably made $50-60.00 a week.

What we need to do is stop perpetuating the idea that we can't get along without the ever bloating government on all levels. Your approach would seem to be "how do we keep it going?", which with all due respect is totally the wrong way to look at it. Instead of just accepting it as the way things are, Government waste and excesses needs to be the theme of the day for decades to inoculate the young. I would argue that our response to Katrina was not a rare event that just happened to be poorly run, but more an open example of how lousy the government is at handling money.

Remember the big "OMG the government is shutdown" crisis back in the 90's? Big press event.....but the real damage was more indoctrination of how much we needed them, when the real affect was less than someone having a toothache in Mongolia for the average citizen....We, on average, don't need half of what is out there from the government. Cut the bastards over time and start it now.

Oh and p.s....avoid socialists with a passion.
