More importantly, these polls are meaningless, even when they AREN'T NYT-biased.
You don't run a country by polls. Clinton did that, and as a result, allowed the terrorist threat to build rather than just dealing with it.
Is it unpopular for a president to get us into a war? Of course. Nobody likes wars. But sometimes the are the best, or only, solution to a problem. And the American People don't have sufficient attention spans to allow them to deal with it if it runs more than a few months. We've seen this time and again.
Bush's accomplishments over 8 years are substantial. However, he blundered early on by signing massive spending bills rather than vetoing them (and in some cases, even proposing them himself, like Part D).
Foreign policy is where Bush has really excelled. He has shown the world that the United States will not be subservient to the UN, and that we WILL stand up and fight if we're attacked. While there have been mistakes made in Iraq, it will ultimately be a success as long as we don't elect a liberal in '08. |
