<<by ignoring the low-end PC segment, arent they [DELL] missing an opportunity?>>

Only an opportunity to reduce their margins.

<<Why do they assume, once low-end PC users graduate to higher-end PCS, would come to DELL, instead of COMPAQ,HP etc from where they got their low-end PC to begin with>>

Because 2nd time buyers don't need the hand holding of a reseller, and becuase of a price advantage going with dell. Dell also is rated better than both Compaq and HP wrt reliability and service, something a first time low end buyer probably doesnt believe matters, but something anyone who has used a PC for a while (2nd rounders) will most assuredly appreciate.
