I think the studies you refer to are from Taiwan. The last time
I visited China, the professors at the universities were getting paid
around $USD35-45/month. Now this was around 4 years ago. The professors were supplementing their income by being street vendors
at night. Perhaps this picture has changed.

Taiwan per capita income is quiet different from their mainland
counterparts. I seen post that said Tawainese PC buyers would paid
around $1800+ for their PC purchases. Understand this: an average
parking space in Taipei,Taiwan sells for $USD80,000...car not
included (cars are typically 2xUS prices...thanks to tariffs)<G>.
