Rolla, my point was about China, not Hong Kong. And about a century ago, not now. China then, with the British Empire running the whole place for the 20th century would have been much better than what they got instead.

As an example of how it would have been better, look at Hong Kong which boomed during the century of British rule.

The idea of running your own things is a con by local thugs who want to rob the ignorant serfs.

The more enlightend of us are happy to have superior people running our things for us. So I hand over my money to QUALCOMM and they turn it into amazing CDMA/OFDM things and pay me huge profits. Left to my own devices, I'd grow corn or something and be a subsistence farmer.

The racist rubes in China, India and Africa preferred to have local thugs and kleptocrats take over from the British Civil Service which had brought civilisation to the world and Hong Kong was a prime example. The local yokels were fed a line of racist and nationalist malarkey "We will be so much better off running our own affairs" - but they got Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, the mess in South Africa, the poverty of India, the Maoistic MADness of China.

The more sensible of us kept the British as long as they were willing to provide leadership. But by the 1970s the British were kicking the hangers-on in the British Empire out onto their own devices as they joined the European Socialist Nirvana and became just another also-ran.
