Intel has been in desperation to move the market to PII. The street talks from Taiwan saying that Intel is babysitting the motherboard manufacturers to help them to cut the costs with the attempt to bring down PII motherboards to $110 level.

Initially, Intel asked $60 for LX chipset and recently reduced it to $45. The street talk said that Intel not only asked these board manufacturers to reduce PCI slots to 2 and ISA to 1. These manufacturers have been instructed to omit all the unnecessary parts and circuits to cut the manufacturing costs to the bone. The system stability was pushed to the last priority under such an guidance from the greatest authority.

Luckily for PC users, lots of motherboard manufacturers are not agree with Intel based on their quality and reputation concern. They argued that their profit margins are too thin to cut while Intel is making $400+ from each PII. Some of them suggested that Intel should drop PII to $150 to boost its sales.
