OT: You write very poetically and convincingly. I just don't agree.

That is wonderful that your children have done so well and had such a great preparation for college...i'm doing the best I can to assure mine do as well all the while filling in gaping deficiencies left by a myopic, politically tuned System. To put it frankly, our public schools are atrocious. They do not foster creativity, independence or true learning. Further, they are barely preparing my children for moving forward in even the most basic academic ranks.

My sense of what a public school should be comes not from any gauzy ideal of utopian academic expectations; it comes from common sense. In our school system, I estimate approximately 40-50% of the "teaching" has been ceded to parents. Third and fourth graders coming home with two to three hours of homework a night and no direction/preparation on how to complete it, ludicrous and nonsensical grading parameters, mindless inculcation on political fads. My son has two classes where they have not "taught" anything in weeks...both teachers (science and social studies) have been opining on global warming for five weeks straight.

You should consider what your children had a blessing. Do not for a minute mistake it for what is going on in the average public school system. You quote John STUART Mill...if you know his writings you know he would be appalled at the mental stockhouse that our public schools have become.
