I can think of two arguments for taxing the rich more. The idea that you mention, that it is more fair (which is particularly strong on the left, but isn't limited to the left).

And one other point. You the rich have more ability to pay. If your trying to extract as much as possible, you want to tax the rich more. Of course if you go to far you damage the economy and encourage people to try to legally or illegally reduce reported income. And also I don't want to try to extract as much as possible, but for some people that or something close to it is the objective.
