Slacker / DataROX, re: Icera Sirific / taking on QCOM in data card space-

"dollar short / day late" ????

Snip……

"Carriers are definitely looking for diversity of supply in the data card space, where Qualcomm have an almost 100 per cent market share", Stan Boland, CEO of Icera, told Electronics Weekly, "we have a technically superior product to the Qualcomm product, our product is smaller, cheaper and with better performance than Qualcomm. We expect to have 33 per cent market share in the data card space by the end of next year."

Interesting, another article about “taking-on QCOM”.

Wonder when we’ll see more (some) written in the same vein about “taking-on” NOK??????

A couple of questions-

1. With QCOM’s Gobi solution hitting the market soon- with devices imminent (apr/ may/ june), do you agree that the data card market will soon be obsoleted by the Gobi solution????

2. believe Sanjay stated during the ASM Q&A that Gobi chips have the potential of 30 mill units over the next 3 to 4 years. Further, during the CTIA webcast I believe Sanjay mentioned that we would start seeing devices enabled with Gobi chips in the Apr, May, June timeframe…. And that they and their partners (Sierra Wireless / Novatel) had reduced their pricing **significantly**.

It appears that QCOM (& hdwe partners) are “taking on” / “chipping away at “ INTC in the laptop space.

…+ Have any guesses what the current Novatel / Sierra Wireless air cards are selling for??

……..+ & The QCOM modules supporting such ???

…+ What the **significant** reductions amount to??

……..Gobi module
..........+ chip cost
..........+ royalty amount
……..Novatel/ Sierra Wireless module w/Gobi

TIA- jim
