1. With QCOM’s Gobi solution hitting the market soon- with devices imminent (apr/ may/ june), do you agree that the data card market will soon be obsoleted by the Gobi solution????

Data cards definitely wont be obsolete. If I am a heavy mobile data user, I am going to want a card/USB modem with the latest technology. By early next year, it will likely be HSPA+ and in 2010 it could be LTE....not to mention the possibility that WiMAX does become widespread. I wouldnt want to be stuck with whatever is currently embedded for the life of the laptop.

The potential I see in Gobi is in expanding the market to those who only occasionally use mobile data. However, while lowering the upfront costs are nice, the real barrier is still the carriers. They have to create more flexible plans that allow for reasonable prices for 24 hours of access. If that happens, then Gobi becomes a possibility for a huge portion of laptop purchasers.

And that they and their partners (Sierra Wireless / Novatel) had reduced their pricing **significantly**.

We'll just have to wait and see how much Q has managed to reduce prices. I am hoping that Gobi will be a sub-$100 option but we'll just have to wait and see how much everything is marked up by all of the players.

The key variable is still the carriers though. You could give me an embedded card for free and I am still unlikely to sign up for a $60 a month data plan. In some ways, I am disappointed that Sprint is delaying their WiMAX rollout. I am hoping that they can shake up the pricing in the industry.
