I see this more and more from military folks: (today) "Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday that President Bush's successor will have to come to grips with the reality that the United States cannot continue to keep such large numbers of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan." In this week's defense trade rag "Defense News" several retired US Generals echo the same. They also said the idea of leaving a small force of US trainers behind won't work, they would be too vulnerable. "The path to political stability will be bloody regardless of whether we withdraw. The idea that the US has moral responsibility to prevent this ignores that reality. We are certainly to blame for it, but we do not have the physical means to prevent it."

I'm not trying to pick a fight, just noting that whoever wins the next election may not have as much leeway as is widely assumed, to continue the current strategy and troop levels.
