Perhaps I misread the post. The idea of getting investigational drugs to people who can benefit from them is a good one. There has to be a middle ground between nanny state protectionism and wild West take at your own risk.

Our current system seems to be broken. Often drugs are approved in other countries before they are in the US. When they are developed in the US that seems crazy.

Perhaps a system where people who have significantly reduced life expectancy from medical conditions are almost automatically approved for many drugs under a sympathetic use exclusion would be worth investigating.

It might not be realistic to expect the current bureaucracy to allow itself to be swept away, so we will probably have to look for tweaks instead of radical change.
