LOL!

I kid you not, true story: Back in the days when I worked in forestry, I got all my tree seedlings at a nursery in Wind River Washington. The nursery manager there had a big problem with birds eating the tree seed right after it was sown.

He tried everything.

Finally, he hired people to walk up and down the nursery beds banging a pie pan whenever they saw a bird alight on the beds. This kept the birds off very well.

I was with a tour of brass hats when we went to the nursery to see what was going on. The brass hats questioned the people banging on pie pans.

The nursery manager said "I have a $100 bill right here, and I'll give it to the first person who has a better idea that works."

Nobody did.

That nursery was the best run nursery I'd ever seen. It no longer exists, shut down because the Forest Service simply does not cut enough timber to need a nursery of that size. They import seedlings grown in California nurseries (sprouted from the correct seed source, which is the only thing that works), but that is a very bad idea in my opinion.

If you had the world's best timber growing land in your back yard, would you grow it yourself or import it from Canada, China, or Siberia? The latter seems to be the case these days. I was out in the woods in my old stomping grounds about a week ago, and there is NOTHING going on at all.
