Its true the A-10s are tougher, and faster, and they may even be cheaper to operate (jet aircraft are expensive to run, but so are helicopters).

Maybe if you could only have one it might even be a good idea to pick the A-10s over the Apaches. I'm not saying it is, but I wouldn't fight the idea.

But you can have both, and each fits different niches (there is a lot over overlap in what they can do, but the overlap is not total).

Short air fields is nice, but there still is some benefit from vertical take off, and for some situations a greater benefit in being able to hover or go very slow.

Believe me I'm not dissing the A-10s, or even expressing opposition to the idea of letting the army have some, I'm just saying the Apache is a useful weapon.
