I've not encountered any reasonable person, other than John McCain, who would even consider these "torture"; and even if they were, I don't know of any reasonable person who wouldn't approve their usage with Al Qaida suspects.

I have no problem with McCain's stance, since he comes from a different perspective than most of us have. But personally, I think waterboarding under limited circumstances to try and extract information that might save American lives is a totally legitimate technique.

Torture? It is borderline -- physically, it is normally harmless, and if these guys undergo some emotional distress I think that's fine. They are not criminals, they are enemies. If the people who are experts on these matters believe it is a useful technique, they ought to be able to go for it. That's not to say it should be our policy, only that productive techniques to make them talk ought to be available when they are useful.

So, the headline to me is totally overstating the content of the article. It is no big deal.
