Yes, that's probably true, but do you actually think that's the ONLY reason that people don't like Bush? Don't you think that some people aren't too happy about the extra $3 Trillion in DEBT we've piled up since he came in?
I believe Bush should never have signed the Teddy Kennedy Education bill and that the prescription drug program was a mistake. So, I do not think Bush has been as fiscally responsible as he should have been.
HOWEVER, it is important to remember that presidents don't spend money -- Congress does. The president can't spend a nickel without a spending bill passing both the House and the Senate. So, it is important to understand that it is Congress, NOT the president who spends money.
As to the spending during Bush's term in office, it is further important to remember that the biggest single event in our nation's history since WWII occurred on Bush's watch -- i.e., we were attacked. So, while I don't like the additional debt, it is a necessary thing.
I would never, ever complain about the debt incurred in defending our nation or strengthening our military. But I do object to Bush having signed spending bills that should have been vetoed. Still, if you give me a choice between a president who is strong in protecting the nation versus one who is more fiscally conservative yet weak on defense, I'd rather have the stronger one.
National defense is one of only a few legitimate functions of our government. The problem is that the Congress spends too much money on unimportant stuff, and not enough on national defense. |
