I would not consider any of the options you mentioned. None of them. What I advocate is voluntary responsible behavior. Enabling irresponsibility is not healthy either for the immediate parties or for society. We can facilitate responsible behavior by making it easier for women to avoid pregnancy, to terminate pregnancy, and to offer babies for adoption. And by making it clear that we don't support irresponsibility.

Every woman at some time faces the decision of whether or not to have children. If she wants to proceed, then the decision is when and how many. We can help her in those decisions. We do not help her or ourselves be communicating that she has a right to as many children as she wants and that, if she doesn't have the wherewithal to provide for them, we will. What kind of sense does that make?

I think that is a difference between you and me.

Here's the difference between you and me. You're an enabler and I'm not.

As for maternity being a basis for universal health care, maternity care is the only entirely voluntary medical condition for which insurance routinely pays. It is only a medical condition secondarily. It is primarily a lifestyle choice. If you think about it, allowing the use of sick leave for maternity is iffy. Women given birth aren't sick unless they experience complications. But I'm not going to pick that nit. I will merely withhold compassion for women two spoiled or too stupid to avoid bringing children into the world recklessly.
