a warped idea of history

I think the "warp" comes from building your paradigm from these little ancidotes up to the big picture. These little just-so stories may be fine for forming an opinion about currents where the big pictures has not yet been shown, but in history you can already see the temporal relationships, if not always the direct cause and effect.

For example, if your theory that Carter messed up Iran in a few short years were correct, then the relationship would have more likely been improved by Reagan and Bush Sr. in the following 16 years. They were, after all, reversing all of Carter's policies.

If you look at your timeline you will instead see that the relationship with Iran was stable, even after the fall of the Shah, until Reagan began his election campaign and made deals with the Iranians to trade guns for their help to discredit Carter. (And then didn't finish their promised supply when the illegal nature of Iran/Contra became public)
