If we faced similar treatment, even infrequently, the odds are high it would come up in our private gatherings and become part of our community meme. Obama's speech was aimed at getting each side to recognize that about the other.

At least he is trying to find ways to get people to think about bridging differences instead of just mouthing all the usual political cliches.

The idea that powerful, affluent people deeply entrenched in the Washington landscape have more than 30 seconds of empathy and understanding for the folks out in the heartland is laughable. You just have to live around here to see how detached that class is. They don't even have more than a vague awareness how poor communities a few miles down the road from them live. They go to A List parties and top restaurants and spend very large amounts of money for their amusements. Top-rank living in DC is not cheap.

Start in a Georgetown or McLean mansion and the gulf is pretty much unbridgeable. Those folks have their chauffeurs drive them to Capitol Hill, not beyond.
