Seems to me a better focus would be on what's doable.

Anything doable that isn't done won't get done, by definition. You haven't defined what lies between inevitable failure and what is "doable". Until you do, it's just a gulf of paralyzing cynicism that leaves us right where we are.

Which is where trying and failing would put us too. So our net potential downside is just about zip considering how much time and money we already waste in the current setup.
