Then what is the "aesthetic contradiction"?

What about law enforcement people? Should they be kept out of universities too? They carry guns and may kill people if needed.

Is there a ROTC like program for law enforcement? That's news to me.

Many universities have departments devoted to law enforcement education. Obviously, many of the attendees are employed as law enforcement and some training to be so employed.

By 1876, the authorized size for the American army was 27k. For a country the size we were then, that's a pretty small army and is typical of more pacifistic states:

Excuse me, but do you see a difference between our expansionist tendencies and internal strife of the past, and our current role as the world's terminator cop? I do.

I do see a difference between our military involvement of the past and that of today. We are less interventionistic now and almost always intervene with as many allies as we can muster and with UNSC authorization if we can get it.
