I saw purple fingers that put this government in place. What is the problem with that? Do we impose too many of our own values on the elected government so they cannot deal with it effectively? What?

The problem is they elected officials at the top first. They came from the corrupt Iraqi elite.

Leaders rise like cream. The correct way to move from an insurgency to a counterinsurgency to a supported federal government is to elect local leaders first.

They will come from the ranks of the counterinsurgents and will have immediate respect because of their combat heroics.
They also have the most to lose...namely their own and their family's lives.

Some of them will rise to regional leadership positions and this is when political parties are formed. Only then is it appropriate to conduct national elections.

We did it bassackwards and replaced one corrupt national government that lacked local support with another.
