Gee, according to Wikipedia, the first commercial cellulosic ethanol plants in the US operated during WWI.

We're not talking about some kind of pie in the sky technology that is decades away from being practical. A company in Spain is currently building a large plant to produce ethanol from cellulose.

Sure, we can take your attitude and simply dismiss as impractical any technology that isn't decades old already. We can just let the rest of the world get out in front on this stuff, and then have to buy the technology from then as our oil supplies inevitably dry up.

Or we could put good old American ingenuity to work and take a leadership position instead.
