My grandfather owned one dog that was truly something. I heard many, many Barry stories. He never owned another dog and I always wondered why with all of the bird hunting he continued to do. One day we are out on the 80 that my brothers and I own now and grandpa took me to this pile of stones and said Barry lays here. Now I knew he had been put down in the late 40's and I asked him why he had the vet put him down. Now this is in 1980 or so and his eyes instantly teared over and he said in those days we didn't have the vet do that so Barry and I rode out here and I helped him from the truck and he and I walked to this hole I had dug and it was almost like Barry knew and he crawled down into the hole to lay in the dirt and he just laid there and then I shot him in the back of the head with my .22.

I knew then why he never had another dog.
