Crop rotation. You can't plant corn in the same land year after year. It takes a huge amount of nutrients and soil components out of the earth. You have to plant crops with different biology every now and then. Many of the corn farmers will be rotating in a year or two of soybeans for this reason.
I do think ethanol from corn is just ridiculous. Start with all the fertilizer it takes to grow corn, which is primarily derived from petroleum processes and natural gas....
