ESS Technology Announces DVD Design Wins

FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- ESS Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:ESST) today announced two design wins for
its new ES3301 and ES3308 chip solution for DVD players. The design awards, the first announced by ESS for major
production DVD systems, are from two of China's major consumer electronic manufacturers. One of the design wins was
received from Nanjing Panda Electronics Company Ltd., one of the top 5 television and consumer electronic manufacturers in
China. The second design win is from Eastbase/Shinco, the largest supplier of VCD players in China.

The ES3301 and ES3308 provide a highly integrated and cost effective DVD solution. The ES3308 performs the MPEG-2
video decoding, AC-3 audio decoding, sub-picture, letter box, and programmable on-screen display (OSD). The ES3301
provides a flexible interface to an external DVD-ROM drive, incorporates DVD copy protection that is fully compliant with
the Content Scrambling System (CSS) specification, complete feature set for system navigation software, and programmable
user interface without external microcontroller. The ES3301 and ES3308 solution comes with ESS SmartStream technology,
which can improve the playability and image quality of a scratched disc, and SmartZoom, which can arbitrarily zoom and pan
across that image.

''We are pleased to select the ESS DVD solution,'' said Patrick Tam, president and CEO of Eastbase. ''They have a
powerful, flexible architecture that is programmable to further enhance feature set. This solution is fully backward compatible
with all VCD feature standards and is very cost effective, meeting all DVD quality and feature requirements.''

''We are very pleased to have our DVD products selected by these major electronics companies,'' said Johnston Chen, ESS
vice president, Asia-Pacific sales. ''Our programmable design approach delivers better performance, enhanced functionality,
and product differentiation which help our customers get more competitive products to market more quickly.''
