<<US market: LCD TV business environment to affect smaller TV makers in 2Q

Latest news
Max Wang and Greg Wu, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Monday 14 April 2008]

Amid economic uncertainty in the US market, some Taiwan-based home appliance makers including Kolin, Teco Electronic & Machinery, and Tatung will not receive as many LCD TV OEM orders as expected in the second quarter, according to today's Chinese-language Commercial times.

Kolin also trimmed its shipments goal for this year from 350,000 units to 230,000 units, while Teco will have problems achieving its shipment goals of 600,000-700,000 units for this year, according to the report. In addition, Sampo has decided to temporarily stop taking OEM orders amid uncertainty in the market, though the company expects the market to be more stable by the end of the third quarter of this year, the report noted

Due to second quarter being the traditional low season for the TV market, first-tier branded LCD TV vendors such as Sony and Samsung have begun offering price reductions to boost their respective LCD TV market share in the North America, with several reports noting that Sony plans to cut prices on its 32-inch LCD TVs to US$699, down from the current price of US$767.

Although it is a major player in the US market, Vizio has already cut its prices for the segment to below US$600.

Royal Philips Electronics has reacted to the competitive environment in North America by selling its branded business to Funai Electric of Japan. Funai will assume responsibility for the sourcing, distribution, marketing and sales of all Philips' consumer television activities in the United States and Canada, according to a recent company press release.

BTW, I was unable to find time to visit BRLC HQ while in AZ.
My elderly relatives think lunch is at 5pm. Twice wasted time
awaiting their arrival. Go figure.
