All the places you mention are cities except the small New England towns which are, as you say, picturesque and have become tourist attractions. The larger places in PA such as Wilkes-Barre and Scranton have made something of a recovery but still have very high unemployment rates....and they are certainly not picturesque...and the cost of living is low. They have been helped by a couple of Interstate highways and WB-Scranton now has the AAA Yankees.. They have tried to make the old coal mining artifacts into tourist attractions with minimum effect. Most of the young people throughout the region that go to college usually don't return. Whereas we in the northeast have a college attendance rate of about 85%, in the coal region it's more like 25%. There are, except for Penn State and it's centers, no major universities outside the big cities. A bunch of former state teachers colleges and maybe about 10 little private colleges and medium sized universities....
