While year-end tax loss selling is certainly a factor to weigh in any decision to buy this bottom fish, I would argue it is not that a great factor with IMP.

If you check IMP's price history for 1997, there weren't many days that IMP traded measurably higher than its present trading range to warrant significant tax loss selling.

Anybody who bought at the beginning of the year IMHO clearly bought on a turnaround, with a longer view on their investment. I don't think many traders would have touched the stock with a 10 foot pole. But those that did probably got in and out on many of the false runnups we've seen over the past year. JMO.
