So it's okay for business to go at things at a feverish haste - but not for the betterment of mankind? Not to save the earth for human habitation?

The oil and gold rushes were pursued for profit using the resources of the rushers. Their choice.

If anyone wants to use his own resources feverishly and hastily to stop GW, have at it. Everyone who is trying to make a buck with alternate energy sources, for example, has my blessing.

When feverish haste consumes the resources of the taxpayer or burdens the unwilling businessman, then we have an obligation to assure that we're getting buy-in and appropriate bang for the buck. And that we are wise and have our priorities straight. Betterment of mankind is in the eye of the beholder. Some might find greater betterment in universal health care or world peace, for example.
