I doubt American Catholic Church "membership" is down much, if at all. A huge percentage of the illegal immigrants in the U.S. are Catholic and they are coming here by the millions. Perhaps they are not being counted (lol), but the churches are overflowing in their neighborhoods. What's probably down is church attendance among Italians, Irish, Polish, etc... that made up a big chunk of church attendance several decades ago. All our grandparents and parents etc... that went often are either dead, very old etc... and their children (my generation and the next) don't attend church much. However, most still consider themselves Catholics.
