"Resistance to plug-ins is VERY high on the web." I'm not so sure of that. There are about twenty million Shockwave-enabled browsers out there now, once you add up downloads and hard-distribution and take away upgrades to plugins and browsers. That's about twice the size of the entire AOL audience.

A general-audience site would likely have debates over whether to use special-purpose plugins, although these are still very useful for special audiences. Over the last year, though, Shockwave, and RealMedia, and Acrobat have become common and accepted extensions to both browser brands. The "no plugins" stance is a bit broad brush these days.

But different delivery formats do each offer advantages. Java can reach non-Mac/Win machines, and can also be extended in different ways. DHTML is great for lightweight animation and interactivity. And if your page finds itself in an unusual browser or on a very slow connection, then dropping back to a standard image would be useful. That's the tack taken by the AfterShock utility which debuted at the conference -- it lets your page gracefully degrade as you choose when it finds itself in different environments.

Native-code plugins and controls aren't going away... plugins, and Java, and DHTML, and GIF each offer special abilities. The key is to make them work together.
