That display of weakness gave the Soviets hope they could horn into the region and they did so by invading Afghanistan.

This is precisely what happened. The Soviets saw Carter's weakness as a clear sign they should move against Afghanistan. It is well-documented.

And the Soviets move into Afghanistan is, in effect, what created Bin Laden, as well.

You just cannot have a weak president like Carter and expect it not to adversely influence the rest of the world. This is a perfect example of what happens when you put a weak individual in the presidency.
