Yes, I noticed that. I found that a useful way to look at it. A truer cost.

since the big social programs get their money through payroll taxes, they show up as a zero here.

I saw a pie chart recently, unfortunately can't recall where, that had Medicaid taking up almost all of the lower left quadrant. Our gal Megan recently titled a blog post "guns and geezers" or some such. That's almost all of the budget.

Personal aside: I made my first appt with a new doctor yesterday and found myself stumbling and stuttering to get out "Medicare" when asked about my insurance. It was awkward and I didn't like the feeling, which I recognized as embarrassment. It was mitigated by my being able to add "and Federal Blue Cross." But it was still uncomfortable.
