I've never been able to tell the difference between "faith" and ordinary self-deception. Since they HAVE, it obvious that people can convince themselves to believe anything, sometimes with frightening intensity.

I don't totally understand the logic or the psychology behind peoples embrace of the various religions, but it's certainly widespread so it must be powerful.
