One bit of reasoning that made sense to me was in the context of Siddhartha when he made his transformation to Buddha (approx 400 BCE). At that time development in central and south asia was severely restricted because the tribal people of the region had become locked in a series of feuds and revenge killings. When Buddha convinced many of these tribes to put off revenge in this lifetime to improve their karma, it allowed trade to expand and brought general prosperity to the region.

Various other religions also took up the revenge or reward after death concept. It may have helped stop a cycle of tit-for-tat violence which severely disrupts society.
