We came very close to pure capitalism during the industrial revolution- and I think it was pretty horrible, which is why papa Marx's ideas became so attractive. No one wants to be chewed up and spit out by pure capitalism- and the people to whom it appeals are the people who are pretty sure they will end up on top- elitists, in other words, or those who aspire to the materialistic "elite" (which is pretty ironic, since these are often people who complain about elitists- of course their idea of "elite" seems to be somewhat synonymous with having and advanced degree. I never fail to get a laugh out of that particular joke. Ayn, herself, was a pretty hoity toity elitist (education wise, and materially)- it's a wonder the folks who don't like elitists can stomach her.)
